Hong Kong: Turning Economic Doldrums into Opportunities

You are invited to this international luncheon forum with Donald Tong, Hong Kong Trade Commissioner, USA.

California’s exports to Hong Kong in 2008 accounted for $5.69 billion, the no. 1 state among all US states; while U.S. exports to Hong Kong were $21.63 billion.

Hong Kong has long been a staunch supporter of free trade. At the beginning of 2010, Hong Kong was ranked by the Washington DC-based Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal as the freest economy in the world for the 16th consecutive year.

Hong Kong's latest developments are measures to stimulate the economic performance amid the global economic turmoil and promote business opportunities. Hong Kong is developing into a wine trading and distribution hub in Asia, resulting from the elimination of a wine duty in February 2008 and other supportive measures, such as the facilitating of movement of wine into mainland China.

SPEAKER

Mr. Tong assumed the post of Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA, the most senior representative of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in North America in October 2008. The Commissioner directs the Hong Kong Government’s efforts in promoting US-Hong Kong economic and trade ties, and constituency-building activities in the US.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Tong was Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, responsible for policy formulation on a wide range of subjects, including development of social enterprise, promotion of civic education and human rights, legal aid, and religious and data privacy matters. He was also responsible for the organization of the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian events held in Hong Kong.
